N21m Salary: I hope Akpabio won’t take punitive action against Kawu– Atiku Abubakar

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has responded to Senator Sumaila Kawu’s disclosure regarding the actual amount of monthly allowances received by senators.

Kawu reportedly stated that Senators receive N21m allowances monthly in addition to a roughly N1m monthly salary.

Atiku, in a statement released on Wednesday, commended Kawu for his boldness.

He also expressed his hope that Senate President Godswill Akpabio would not suspend Kawu like he did with Ningi and Ndume.

Atiku’s remarks were detailed in a statement penned by his Media Adviser, Paul Ibe, titled “Akpabio oversees a NASS that flouts RMFAC regulations by setting its own excessive salaries/allowances while Nigerians suffer from hunger, poverty, and insecurity.”

The former Vice President stated: “Senator Sumaila Kawu has bravely come forward to reveal that he receives a monthly allowance of N21 million apart from a salary of around N1 million, thus supporting former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s claim that it was morally wrong for the Senator Godswill Akpabio-led NASS to determine its own salaries and allowances in violation of Nigerian laws.

Sumaila’s stance not only validates Obasanjo’s statement but also disproves the Senate’s official defense that it does not set its own salaries and allowances.

In a body filled with spineless individuals unwilling to hold the reckless executive accountable, Sumaila’s courageous actions deserve praise.

Atiku continued, “It is ironic that the NASS, tasked with legislating for Nigeria’s good governance, is the very institution breaking the law and undermining the RMFAC, the constitutionally-mandated commission responsible for setting salaries and allowances for public officials, including NASS members.

RMFAC must assert its authority and enforce the law regarding public officials’ salaries and allowances.

“Akpabio and his corrupt associates can now understand why outraged Nigerians took to the streets for 10 days during the #EndBadGovernanceProtest to demand an end to the mismanagement of the country.

“And for individuals like Dele Alake who are perpetuating the propaganda of the Bola Tinubu administration: the ‘Movement’ he referenced was not aimed at overthrowing the government but at addressing the hunger caused by the failed policies of this administration.”
