Naval officer drowns while
rescuing crew from stranded vessel
A naval officer tragically drowned on Friday while heroically attempting to rescue stranded crew members from a capsized boat off the coast of Rivers State. The officer, whose identity has not been disclosed, was part of a naval team deployed to aid in the rescue operation.
The distress call was made when a fishing boat capsized due to rough seas, leaving its crew in peril. The naval team, responding swiftly to the emergency, arrived at the scene to find the boat overturned and several crew members struggling in the water.
Despite the challenging conditions, the officer bravely entered the turbulent waters to assist the stranded individuals. Tragically, while successfully helping several crew members to safety, the officer was caught by a strong current and was pulled under.

In a statement, the naval authorities commended the officer’s bravery and dedication, describing the incident as a “heartbreaking reminder of the risks involved in maritime rescue operations.” They expressed condolences to the officer’s family and reaffirmed their commitment to maritime safety and rescue efforts.
The Rivers State Government and local maritime authorities have pledged to investigate the circumstances surrounding the capsizing of the boat and the subsequent rescue operation.
