NFF President, Gusau, mourns former CAF President Issa Hayatou

The President of the Nigerian Football Federation, Ibrahim Musa Gusau, has expressed his condolences to the Cameroonian football community and the African football community as a whole, following the passing of former President of the Confederation of African Football, Issa Hayatou.

A former champion in the 400m and 800m events in Cameroon, who served as President of CAF from March 10, 1988 to March 16, 2017, Hayatou passed away after a long illness in Paris on the eve of his 78th birthday.

“The NFF and the entire Nigerian football community are deeply saddened by the loss of Alhaji Issa Hayatou. He was a respected and beloved leader in African football and worked hard to improve African football during his time in office.

“Alhaji Hayatou was a man of great integrity and strength of character. While we mourn his loss, we trust that he is now in a better place. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and the Cameroonian, and indeed, African football community.”

Hayatou, who previously served as Secretary of the Cameroon Football Federation (FECAFOOT) in the 1970s, was elected as CAF President during the 1988 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, succeeding interim President Dr. Abdelhalim Mohamed, who had taken over after the death of Dr. Ydnekatchew Tessema.
