Nigerian Catholic bishops condemn Olympic ceremony as attack on christianity
Nigerian Catholic bishops have strongly criticised a segment of the 2024 Olympic opening ceremony, calling it a deliberate attempt to demean Christianity. This denunciation comes amidst heightened political and religious tensions, particularly in light of the upcoming U.S. presidential election featuring former President Barack Obama.
In a controversial statement, the bishops alleged that the ceremony’s perceived blasphemy was part of a broader strategy tied to Obama’s political agenda. They suggested that such actions would have incited violent reactions from adherents of other major religions, referencing the tragic cases of Gideon Akaluka in Kano and Deborah Samuel Yakubu in Sokoto.
“The blasphemy was meant to complement Hussein Obama’s 2024 U.S. presidential election already-failed script for his ‘promised land’ of Islamized World,” the bishops claimed. They further warned, “The other major religion would have violently terminated the 2024 Olympics a la Gideon Akaluka in Kano or, more recent, Deborah Samuel Yakubu in Sokoto.”

Archbishop Abegunrin was commended for his bold stance, embodying his pastoral duty as a global representative for Nigerian Catholics. “Thank you, Archbishop Abegunrin, for this courageous and timely denunciation. You live up to your pastoral responsibility by being a competent spokesperson, at global arena, for all Nigeria Roman Catholics,” said Oluwole, an octogenarian in the U.S.
In the wake of these developments, questions arise about the implications for Nigeria’s political landscape, particularly the potential for a Muslim-Muslim ticket in the forthcoming presidential election. Oluwole commented, “Do I hear Nigeria presidential election Muslim-Muslim ticket in this regard?”
The bishops’ statement also reflects a broader call for vigilance and divine justice. “Our own God never sleeps. So, the bullets missed DJT. Thank you, our Jesus,” Oluwole remarked, interpreting DJT as “Divine Judgement Time” and emphasizing that “the time is now here. God’s judgement no appeal.”
