NJC sets up committees to probe judicial officers, issues advisory to Oyo Judge

The National Judicial Council (NJC), led by Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, has established four committees to investigate judicial officers based on petitions deemed meritorious.

The decision was made during the NJC’s 106th meeting, held on August 14th and 15th, 2024.

In addition, the NJC has issued a letter of advice to Hon. Justice Olusegun Muniru Olagunju of the Oyo State High Court, urging him to exercise greater caution in his role as a judicial officer.

This follows a review of his language in a letter addressed to the Chief Justice of Nigeria, which challenged the Council’s decision on the appointment of the President of the Customary Court of Appeal in Oyo State.

The NJC also reviewed 22 petitions against 27 judicial officers from Federal and State High Courts.

While four committees were established to investigate the petitions that were found to have merit, 18 petitions were dismissed for various reasons, including lack of merit, abandonment, or sub judice.

Furthermore, the NJC placed five judges on a pre-sanction watch list for poor performance. These judges will face sanctions if their performance does not improve.

The Council also issued letters of commendation, appreciation, and other feedback to 215 judges across the country.

As this meeting was the last before his retirement, the outgoing Chief Justice, Justice Ariwoola, received accolades from the Council members for his leadership and contributions.
