NLC calls emergency meeting after invasion of Labour House

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has called for an emergency National Executive Council (NEC) meeting following a shocking late-night invasion of its Headquarters, the Labour House, in Abuja. The meeting, scheduled for tomorrow at 4 pm, will be held virtually to determine the Congress’s response to this alarming development.

On Wednesday night, heavily armed security personnel, including officers from the Nigeria Police Force and individuals in plain clothes, stormed the Labour House around 8:30 pm. They forcibly entered the second and tenth floors, ransacking offices and a bookshop, and allegedly confiscating materials they claimed were used to incite recent protests.

The invasion has sparked widespread outrage, with the Labour Writers Association of Nigeria (LAWAN) among the first to condemn the actions. In a statement signed by Chairman Toba Agboola and Secretary Adenike Ajiboye, LAWAN expressed grave concern over what they termed a “flagrant violation of fundamental human rights.”

“All lovers of democracy and rule of law should condemn this dastardly action of the nation’s law enforcement agents who took laws into their hands to invade the NLC Headquarters,” LAWAN stated. “This act is in flagrant violation of fundamental human rights as enshrined in the 1999 constitution as amended. It is unfair, unjust, and unacceptable. This show of shame must stop to save our hard-earned democracy.”

The NLC also condemned the incident in strong terms, emphasizing that such an act is unprecedented even in the country’s most challenging times. “Even in the dark days of military rule, NLC secretariats were never invaded and ransacked by security agents. Today is indeed a very sad day for our democracy,” stated Benson Upah, the NLC’s Head of Media and Public Relations.
