Paris 2024: Nigeria’s Rena Wakama named best basketball coach
Rena Wakama, head coach of Nigeria’s women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, has been recognised as the best female basketball coach at the Paris 2024 Olympics. The announcement was made by the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) via their official X (formerly Twitter) account on Saturday.
Wakama, who made history as the first Nigerian female basketball coach, led D’Tigress to a remarkable quarter-finals appearance at the Olympics. This achievement marked the first time an African team, whether men or women, reached this stage in the competition. Despite a tough 74-88 loss to Team USA in the quarter-finals, Wakama’s strategic prowess and leadership drew commendation from FIBA officials.

Her appointment in June 2023 had been met with skepticism due to her limited international experience.
