Police confirm 5 dead, 15 missing in Jigawa canoe mishap
The Jigawa State Police Command has confirmed the deaths of five individuals and reported that 15 others are missing following a tragic canoe mishap in the state on Thursday.
According to a statement released by the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Lawan Shiisu, the incident took place in Nahuce Village, Taura Local Government Area (LGA) of Jigawa State.
Shiisu detailed that the accident occurred around 12:00 p.m. when a canoe carrying 20 passengers capsized while attempting to cross the Gamoda River at Nahuce Village.
“Upon receiving the report, a team of policemen, along with local divers and good Samaritans, rushed to the scene to carry out a rescue operation,” Shiisu stated.
The deceased have been identified as Abdurra’uf Mohammed (15 years old), Suleman Ali (20), Shafiu Mohammed (25), Ado Nafance (7), and Alasan Mohmmed (16), all of whom were residents of Taura LGA.

Shiisu also mentioned that efforts are ongoing to recover the bodies of the remaining 15 passengers who are still unaccounted for.
The Commissioner of Police in Jigawa State, Ahmadu Abdullahi, expressed his condolences, praying for the souls of the deceased and for their families to have the strength to bear the loss.
This incident comes just a month after a similar tragedy occurred in Kwalgai Village, Auyo LGA of Jigawa State, where two individuals lost their lives and 18 others were rescued.
