A former Technical Adviser to the Minister of Petroleum Resources, Engineer Daniel Kunle, has issued a sharp critique of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), describing it as a “bureaucratic clerical entity” that has failed to meet the country’s oil production targets.
In an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Kunle expressed his disappointment with the corporation’s inability to supply adequate crude oil, specifically highlighting its failure to produce up to 2 million barrels per day.
“NNPC does not produce crude oil,” Kunle stated bluntly. “They just manage documents for us. It is a clerical entity; that whole place is just a bureaucratic clerical entity. They do not produce. Show me one rig they have. They can not give what they don’t have.”
Kunle’s criticisms did not stop there. He called for the resignation of the NNPC’s Group Chief Executive Officer, Mele Kyari, and his team, citing their failure to meet the demands of the country. “His team has failed the country, a big failure. For the last ten years, have you hit 2 million barrels per day with your reserve? It is the system. If you are the head, you resign; if it is not working, you resign.”

However, Kunle expressed optimism about the future of Nigeria’s oil sector, thanks to the Dangote Refinery. He argued that the refinery, with its capacity to produce about 50 million litres of petrol per day, is crucial for securing Nigeria’s fuel supply for the next decade.
“What we get from the Dangote refinery in the next five years will help us to transit to electricity,” Kunle stated. He suggested that this refinery could serve as a vital bridge to a future where Nigeria relies less on fossil fuels and more on renewable energy.
Kunle’s remarks have reignited the debate over NNPC’s role in Nigeria’s oil industry and the potential impact of the Dangote Refinery on the nation’s energy security.
