Dangote refutes ₦898 per litre petrol pricing, says sales with NNPCL were in dollars

Dangote Refinery has revealed that it sold Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) to the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) in dollars.

Anthony Chiejina, Group Chief Branding and Communications Officer at Dangote, made this disclosure in a statement on Sunday.

Chiejina was responding to the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited’s (NNPCL) claim that it bought fuel from Dangote Refinery at ₦898 per litre.

In a statement to newsmen about the price of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), also known as petrol, NNPCL Chief Spokesperson Olufemi Soneye said, “We successfully loaded PMS at the Dangote Refinery today.

“The claim that we purchased it at ₦760 per litre is incorrect. For this initial loading, the price from the refinery was ₦898 per litre.”

He told journalists that, as of the time of reporting, over 70 trucks had been loaded.

It had been previously reported that the oil firm moved about 300 trucks to the 650,000-capacity refinery in Lagos on Saturday, with loading commencing on Sunday.

However, Dangote Refinery responded, saying, “Our attention has been drawn to a statement attributed to NNPCL spokesperson Mr. Olufemi Soneye, claiming that we sell our PMS at ₦898 per litre to NNPCL.

“This statement is both misleading and mischievous, deliberately aimed at undermining the milestone achievement recorded today, September 15, 2024, towards addressing the energy insufficiency and insecurity that have plagued the economy for the past 50 years.”

“We urge Nigerians to disregard this malicious statement and await a formal announcement on pricing by the Technical Sub-Committee on Naira-based crude sales to local refineries, appointed by His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR, which will commence on October 1, 2024. Please note that our current stock of crude was procured in dollars.

“It should also be noted that we sold the products to NNPCL in dollars, resulting in significant savings compared to what they are currently importing. This action ensures that petrol will be available in every local government area of the country, regardless of their remoteness.”

“We assure Nigerians of the availability of quality petroleum products and a resolution to the endemic fuel scarcity in the country.”
