Sokoto investigates ₦16.1bn diversion under Tambuwal gov’t

The Sokoto State Commission of Inquiry is investigating the sale of the state’s shares, valued at ₦16.1 billion, by Sokoto State Investment Limited during the tenure of the former Governor, Aminu Tambuwal.

In a briefing to the press, the Commission’s counsel, Amanzi F. Amanzi, explained that the inquiry was initiated to examine the alleged sale of these state shares by the company.

“In 2018, the Accountant General transferred all government shares to Sokoto State Investment Limited via a formal letter. Between 2022 and 2023, these shares were sold, and the transactions remain unaccounted for,” Amanzi stated.

“The commission has been tasked with investigating the sale of these shares and the whereabouts of the proceeds. According to the memo, a total of ₦16.1 billion is alleged to be unaccounted for.

“Additionally, it is claimed that ₦4 billion of this amount was distributed to private and corporate accounts without justification,” he alleged.

He also noted that the commission has received complaints from individuals who purchased land in the Sokoto New City, which has since been revoked by the current administration.

One of the complainants has requested that the commission investigate their grievances, expressing hope that justice will ultimately be served.
