DSS frees 6 detained #EndBadGovernance protesters, to arraign 3

No fewer than six individuals detained by the Department of State Services (DSS) for their involvement in the recent #EndBadGovernance protests across Nigeria have been released, Vanguard learned on Sunday.

According to reliable security sources, the six persons were freed last Thursday in Kaduna under the orders of the DSS Director General, Adeola Oluwatosin Ajayi.

A source familiar with the situation told Vanguard that three other suspects are still being held and are set to be prosecuted, having been found to have committed criminal offences during the protests.

“The DG DSS is not interested in incarcerating innocent citizens for exercising their constitutional rights. However, he will not tolerate criminal elements taking the law into their own hands. We have clear evidence against the three individuals, and charges will be pressed,” the source said.

The Director General reiterated the right to peaceful protest as enshrined in the constitution, but stressed that the DSS remains committed to investigating and prosecuting anyone who uses such protests to commit crimes.

Those released have reportedly expressed gratitude for the humane treatment they received from the DSS and commended the agency’s approach to the investigation that led to their unconditional release.

The #EndBadGovernance protests took place from August 1 to 10 across major cities and towns in Nigeria, with the aim of drawing attention to the economic hardship in the country. Unfortunately, the protests were hijacked by criminal elements in several states, resulting in widespread harassment and intimidation of innocent citizens by hoodlums.
