Edo Election: APC’s Okpebholo wins Obaseki’s LG

Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki has lost his local government area to the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Monday Okpebholo, in the governorship election held on September 21, 2024.

Despite Obaseki’s strong support for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Asue Ighodalo, the results declared by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) show that the APC garnered 30,780 votes compared to the PDP’s 24,938. The Labour Party’s Olumide Akpata trailed with 5,389 votes.

This election is crucial, as Obaseki’s second term is set to end on November 12, 2024. Edo State, along with seven others, is conducting off-season elections due to ongoing litigations. Of the 2,629,025 registered voters, 85.57% possess Permanent Voter’s Cards.

While 17 candidates are vying for the governorship, the race is largely seen as a contest between Ighodalo, Okpebholo, and Akpata, each backed by strong party affiliations in their respective regions.
