25-year-old man allegedly hacks mother to death, sets body ablaze
A 25-year-old man identified as Emmanuel has been arrested by police in Sapele, Delta State, after allegedly hacking his 53-year-old mother to death and setting her body on fire. The gruesome incident occurred on Saturday, September 6, 2024, in the Ugbeyiyi area of Sapele.
According to a close family friend and pastor, Rev. Prince Umukoro, Emmanuel had been struggling with mental health issues linked to substance abuse. The pastor, who requested anonymity, revealed that Emmanuel had previously undergone drug rehabilitation but recently showed signs of relapse.
The situation escalated when Emmanuel’s father was away attending a burial in Imo State. Left alone with his mother, Emmanuel reportedly attacked her with a brand-new axe. After the attack, he dragged her body outside and set it ablaze.
Neighbours and local residents who witnessed the aftermath reported that Emmanuel fled the scene in his mother’s Sienna car. He was later apprehended by the police at Effurun Roundabout in Warri and brought back to the Sapele Police Station.

Delta State Police Command spokesman, Edafe Bright, has yet to confirm the details of the incident. However, a reliable police source disclosed that the body of the deceased, known in the community as ‘Mama Faith,’ has been taken to Sapele Central Hospital. The source added that Emmanuel was found attempting to transport passengers in the stolen vehicle.
