Implement minimum wage before workers are reduced to beggars, SSANIP tells Tinubu

The Senior Staff Association of Nigeria Polytechnics (SSANIP) has raised alarm over the federal government’s delay in implementing the newly signed minimum wage law.

Two months after President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s approval, workers continue to face financial hardship, as the promised wage increase has yet to take effect.

In a communiqué issued at the conclusion of SSANIP’s 73rd quarterly General Executive Council meeting in Abuja, the association, led by President Comrade Philip A. Ogunsipe and Secretary Comrade Nura Shehu Gaya, called for urgent action.

The association warned that the ongoing delay is pushing workers into poverty, urging the government to implement the minimum wage before employees are reduced to begging.

The communiqué emphasized that “the government must honour its promise of paying arrears from March 2024 to date, ensuring that workers are not left in financial limbo.”

SSANIP also expressed disappointment in the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) for failing to form a committee to address stakeholder concerns over polytechnic service schemes, despite clear directives from the Federal Ministry of Education.

Additionally, the association called on the NBTE to address irregularities in the appointment of principal officers in state polytechnics, particularly in Jigawa and Plateau, and condemned the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) for overstepping its bounds in regulating ND and HND admissions.

SSANIP also criticised the recent fuel price hikes, stating that these increases have further deepened the economic strain on Nigerians, urging the government to act swiftly to alleviate workers’ burdens.
