Abuja metro rail transports over 250,000 passengers in 100 days – Official
The Abuja Rail Mass Transit, also known as the Metro Rail, has transported over 250,000 passengers in its first 100 days of operation, according to an official statement from the China Civil Engineering and Construction Company (CCECC).
John Zhao, a CCECC official, disclosed this via his X handle on Friday, celebrating the milestone of Phase 1 of the rail system, which has been operational since its launch on May 29, 2024.
This phase, spanning two lines, covers a total of 45 kilometers across 12 stations, reaching speeds of up to 100 km/h.
“The Phase I of the Abuja Rail Mass Transit by #CCECC has been operating safely for over 100 days! Consisting of 2 lines with a total length of 45 km and 12 stations, the maximum operating speed of the trains can reach 100 km/h,” Zhao posted.
The rail system connects critical points in Abuja, including the city center, Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, and Kubwa satellite town, effectively reducing traffic congestion in the capital.

President Bola Tinubu commissioned the Metro Rail system, which began commercial operations on May 29, 2024. Following the launch, Tinubu extended free train rides for six months, allowing commuters to enjoy the service at no cost until the end of the year.
This extension followed an earlier announcement by the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, granting two months of free rides to willing commuters.
