ASUU threatens strike after expiration of 21-day ultimatum to Nigerian Govt
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has issued a stern warning, holding the Federal Government responsible for any potential industrial unrest in Nigeria’s public universities.
The union, through a statement signed by the Federal University, Dutse (FUD) Chairman, Comrade Dr. Salim Ahmad, noted that the nation’s universities have been embroiled in industrial disputes over the last four years, leading to two significant strike actions. These strikes, ASUU argues, were both costly and avoidable.
ASUU stated that despite numerous efforts to engage in dialogue with government officials, including meetings with President Bola Tinubu, there has been little to no progress on resolving outstanding issues. According to the union, the government’s nonchalant attitude mirrors the approach of the previous Buhari administration.

“The leadership of ASUU has made concerted efforts to dialogue with government officials, including the President, in order to address the outstanding issues in the agreement and the memoranda signed between the Union and the Federal Government,” the statement read. “Unfortunately, the Tinubu administration, like Buhari’s, has remained unyielding.”
Following extensive consultations, ASUU’s National Executive Council (NEC) held a meeting at the University of Ibadan on 17th and 18th August 2024. During this meeting, it was resolved that a 21-day ultimatum would be given to the Federal Government to address the union’s demands. The ultimatum was formally communicated to the government through the Minister of Education via a letter dated 20th August 2024.
With the expiration of the 21-day ultimatum, ASUU reports that the Federal Government has failed to show any genuine commitment to addressing the issues at hand. The union emphasized that unless their monetary and non-monetary demands are met, Nigeria’s public universities are heading toward another period of industrial disharmony.
