Compel AGF to prosecute Boko Haram sponsors, lawyer tells court

Lagos-based lawyer, Evans Ufeli, has filed a lawsuit at the Federal High Court in Lagos, seeking to compel the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) to prosecute individuals allegedly identified by the Federal Government as sponsors of the Boko Haram terrorist group.

Ufeli, who also serves as the Executive Director of Cadrell Advocacy Centre, is requesting the court to issue an Order of Mandamus. This order would mandate the AGF to immediately begin the prosecution of all individuals listed as Boko Haram sponsors.

The suit names the AGF and the National Security Adviser as respondents. In an affidavit, Ufeli recounted that the government, following an extensive investigation, had identified several private individuals and corporate bodies, particularly Bureau de Change operators, as financiers of terrorism.

According to Ufeli, documents from the Nigeria Sanctions Committee (NSC) website reveal that 21 individuals and six companies were flagged as terrorism sponsors. Despite this, no prosecution has taken place, prompting Ufeli to act.

Citing his personal loss from the Boko Haram-led Abuja-Kaduna train attack, Ufeli emphasized the importance of prosecuting these individuals to deter future financiers of terrorism. “Failure to prosecute these individuals undermines efforts to fight terrorism and creates an environment of impunity,” he stated.

Ufeli’s petition highlights the breach of statutory duties by the AGF and National Security Adviser for their inaction and stresses that leaving such acts unaddressed is against public policy.

No date has been set for the court to hear the case.
