Customs collects ₦277.5bn in import duties, intensifies anti-smuggling
The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) recorded significant revenue growth in August 2024, collecting ₦277.5 billion in import duties and ₦15.8 billion in excise duties.
This achievement underscores the NCS’s commitment to revenue generation, enforcement activities, and trade facilitation.
During a joint press briefing in Abuja, the NCS highlighted its success in combating smuggling through its “Operation Whirlwind” initiative, which led to 83 seizures.
These included 170,000 litres of PMS, 3,083 bags of foreign rice, 1,014 parcels of Cannabis Sativa, 23 vehicles, and other contraband, amounting to a Duty Paid Value (DPV) of ₦975 million.
The NCS also intensified efforts to curb the smuggling of petroleum products, intercepting seven PMS trucks, sealing 12 retail outlets, and seizing 466,000 litres of PMS.
Several suspects have been prosecuted, and three marketers fined by the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA).
Additionally, the NCS made strides in trade facilitation with the launch of the Authorised Economic Operators (AEO) programme, aimed at enhancing Nigeria’s position in international trade.
