Feeling “Hangry”? Here’s why hunger makes you lose your cool
We’ve all been there – that sudden surge of irritability just when your stomach starts to rumble. You’re not just hungry, you’re “hangry.” It’s a feeling that many of us know too well, where hunger and anger seem to strike simultaneously. But what causes this peculiar mix of emotions?
According to experts, the phenomenon of being “hangry” can be traced back to a very simple biological reason: glucose. Glucose, which comes from the food we eat, is the primary source of energy for our bodies – and more importantly, for our brains. When our glucose levels drop, especially after hours without eating, our brains struggle to function properly, making it harder to control emotions.
Interestingly, the part of the brain responsible for managing impulses and regulating emotional reactions, the prefrontal cortex, is highly sensitive to glucose levels. When we’re low on glucose, this area has less energy to work with, making us more prone to frustration, anger, and impatience.
As Dr. Amanda Smith, a nutritionist, explains: “When you haven’t eaten for a while, your body signals that it’s time to refuel. If glucose levels drop too low, your brain starts to prioritize survival over emotional regulation, which is why you may snap at someone or feel irritable without reason.”
So the next time you find yourself on the edge, feeling that familiar mix of anger and hunger, remember that your brain is simply running low on fuel. A quick snack could be all you need to regain control of your mood and avoid that dreaded “hangry” feeling.
