FG: Over 40% of Nigerians now have access to 20 hours electricity daily
The federal government has announced that over 40 percent of electricity consumers in Nigeria now enjoy 20 hours of stable power supply daily.
Minister of Power Adebayo Adelabu made this disclosure during a review of the ministry’s achievements over the past year, in preparation for Nigeria’s 64th Independence Day celebrations.
In a statement on Sunday, Adelabu emphasized that the achievements of his ministry were not accidental, crediting the progress to the efforts made by the ministry with the support of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

He stated, “The major achievement is that we now generate over 5,500 megawatts of power, transmit and distribute it, and over 40% of customers enjoy more than 20 hours of regular power supply nationwide.”
“You can see a significant improvement since we took office, and we intend to enhance it further,” he stated.
He noted that the initiatives being implemented by the Ministry of Power align with President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope agenda, emphasizing that providing stable power to Nigerians was a key promise made during the President’s campaign.
The minister added that Nigeria must achieve stability in electricity supply to foster economic growth and industrial development.
“This is why we see great economies like South Korea, China, Europe, and North America industrialized today. Their stability in electricity supply has been instrumental to their economic growth and industrial development.
“That is why we must achieve this for Nigeria. We need to secure the necessary economic growth and industrial development.”
Further highlighting the ministry’s accomplishments, Adelabu stated, “Within a year, we completed the pilot phase of this project, which involved importing 10 power transformers and 10 mobile substations. They have arrived, been installed, and commissioned.
“Thus, the stability in electricity that we enjoy today is not by accident; it is due to these transformers and mobile substations that we have commissioned and installed.
“However, there is the issue of the meter gap. Out of nearly 13 million customers in the industry, over 7 million are still without meters and are on estimated billing.
“We recognize that this is not sustainable. To address this, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu established the Presidential Metering Initiative, which aims to install over 10 million meters within the next five years, targeting at least 2 million meters annually.
“We are making progress. Funds are being allocated, and we will soon begin acquiring these meters, which will help reduce the meter gap.”
