Flood: Fear grips Maiduguri residents as Alau Dam overflows bank
Residents along the banks of River Yedzaram in Maiduguri are gripped with fear as heavy rainfall causes the river to overflow its banks.
The situation has worsened following reports that Alau Dam, now at full capacity, is set to release excess water into the river at any moment, raising concerns of widespread flooding.
Some areas, including Gwange Ward, have already experienced submerged farmlands and buildings, while others like the customs area, College of Agriculture, and the 505 Estates are also battling the devastating impact of floodwaters.
Mustapha Ali, a resident of Gwange, voiced his concerns, stating, “We are in distress and afraid that more rainfall or the release of water from the dam will spell more doom for us.”

As a precaution, some residents in Bulabulin Ward have started evacuating, fearing the worst as floodwaters continue to expand into residential areas.
The Secretary to the Borno State Government, Alhaji Bukar Tijjani, led a team to Alau Dam on Thursday to assess the situation and assure residents that safety measures are being implemented.
The recent heavy downpour has caused severe flooding across several regions, including Biu, Chibok, Konduga, Bama, Dikwa, and Jere, leaving residents across the state anxious about further devastation.
