Flooding: Kano, Benue, 5 other states at risk – FG warns

The Federal Government has issued a dire warning, predicting heavy rainfall over a five-day period that could result in significant flooding across 21 states and 123 specific locations in the country. Seven states—Benue, Kogi, Anambra, Delta, Imo, Rivers, and Bayelsa—are expected to be severely affected.
The flood forecast, obtained from the National Flood Early Warning Systems Centre of the Federal Ministry of Environment, cautioned communities downstream of the River Benue to be on high alert as rainfall between September 4 and 8, 2024, may cause widespread flooding.
Among the states at risk, Adamawa, Benue, Bauchi, Kogi, Borno, Nasarawa, and Gombe were highlighted, with specific areas identified in each state as vulnerable to the expected downpour. Kano, Katsina, Kebbi, Sokoto, Yobe, and Zamfara states were also included in the list of areas that could experience severe flooding.
In response to the rising water levels in the Rivers Benue and Niger, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) urged affected states, especially those in central and southern Nigeria, to take proactive measures to mitigate potential disasters. These include clearing blocked drainages, constructing temporary flood barriers, and relocating from flood-prone areas to higher ground.

In a press release, NEMA’s Head of Press Unit, Manzo Ezekiel, stated, “Communities are advised to stay informed through weather updates and take necessary precautions to prevent loss of life and property.” The agency also called for cooperation with local emergency services and emphasized the importance of evacuating from areas that are most at risk.
NEMA’s Director-General, Zubaida Umar, reinforced the need for early action, saying, “Preparedness is key in reducing the impact of flooding. We urge all residents in vulnerable areas to heed our warnings and take immediate preventive measures to safeguard lives and property.”
With this alert, the Federal Government is urging the public to remain vigilant, stay informed, and take preventive steps to avoid the devastating effects of the expected floods.
