Indefinite strike looms as SSANU, NASU issue fresh ultimatum to FG

The Senior Staff Association of Nigeria Universities (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Universities (NASU) Joint Action Committee has given the Federal Government an ultimatum to pay outstanding salaries or face an indefinite strike.
In a statement jointly signed by SSANU President, Mohammed Ibrahim, and NASU General Secretary Prince Peters Adeyemi on Wednesday, the unions revealed that they had given the government a three-week ultimatum to meet their demands.
This follows the expiration of a 10-day grace period for the payment of four months’ withheld salaries, which ended on July 26, 2024.

The new ultimatum, which began on Tuesday, September 17, 2024, demanded that the Federal Government settles the unpaid salaries within the three-week period or face a nationwide shutdown of universities and inter-university centres.
The unions are pressing for several key issues, including payment of four months withheld salaries, improved remuneration, settlement of earned allowances, and full implementation of the 2009 agreement between the unions and the Federal Government.
SSANU and NASU expressed frustration with the government’s failure to act within the initial six-week ultimatum given in July, warning that if these demands are not met, they will have no choice but to shut down academic activities indefinitely.
