Insecurity: Declare state of emergency in Zamfara, APC urges FG

The Zamfara state chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has urged the Federal Government to declare a state of emergency in the region to bolster efforts against banditry. The party, in a statement signed by spokesperson Yusuf Idris, alleged that Governor Dauda Lawal has been actively undermining federal initiatives aimed at combating banditry for political reasons related to his predecessor, Bello Mattawalle.

The APC claims that the current military operations, which have reportedly begun to yield significant results in subduing bandit leaders, are at risk due to Governor Lawal’s attempts to politicise the situation. The statement accused Lawal of using media campaigns to distract from the federal government’s achievements in tackling insecurity, asserting that his actions are intended to position himself for a political advantage in the upcoming 2027 elections.

“Governor Lawal is trying to sabotage the ongoing military operations through confrontational media campaigns,” the statement alleged. It described how Lawal’s resistance to military operations is jeopardising the safety and security of Zamfara citizens.

The APC further argued that the ongoing military efforts, which are coordinated by Minister of State for Defence, Dr. Bello Mohammed Matawalle, have effectively weakened the power of bandit leaders who previously terrorised the region. The party asserted that the federal government’s commitment to combating banditry is commendable and must be sustained to eradicate criminal activities from the area.

In their call for a state of emergency, the APC insisted that such a measure would enable security forces to operate without interference from the state government. The statement highlighted concerns that Lawal has failed to provide logistical support for military operations, suggesting that his political ambitions have taken precedence over the security needs of the state.

Moreover, the APC condemned Lawal for perpetuating unfounded attacks against his predecessor, asserting that Matawalle had previously offered opportunities for collaboration in the fight against banditry, which were met with hostility.
