Key players set to influence outcome of Edo governorship election today

As the highly anticipated Edo State governorship election unfolds on Saturday, September 21, 2024, major contenders engage in last-minute political manoeuvring for the coveted seat at the Dennis Osadebay House in Benin City. While 17 candidates have been cleared to contest, political analysts highlight three primary contenders: Olumide Akpata of the Labour Party (LP), Asue Ighodalo of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and Monday Okpebholo of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The election’s outcome may heavily depend on several influential political figures:
Godwin Obaseki : The incumbent governor is lending his support to Ighodalo, hoping to secure a successor much like his predecessor, Adams Oshiomhole, did for him. Obaseki, however, faces intense pressure to deliver, having described the election as a “do or die affair.”
Adams Oshiomhole : A former two-term governor and current Senator, Oshiomhole remains a critical player in Edo politics. His tumultuous past with Obaseki, from mentor to rival, sets the stage for a fierce political battle. Oshiomhole’s significant influence and federal backing make him a formidable force as he chairs the APC campaign council.
Gabriel Igbinedion : The Esama of Benin, who recently celebrated his 90th birthday, wields considerable political and financial influence. His endorsement could sway voters, as demonstrated by Oshiomhole’s public attempt to seek forgiveness for past grievances during Igbinedion’s birthday celebration.
Philip Shaibu : The embattled Deputy Governor of Edo, Shaibu’s support for the APC candidate after his fallout with Obaseki adds complexity to the election dynamics. He insists that his choice of candidate is a personal right.
