Lawmaker’s wife under fire for ‘Empowering’ youths with sugarcane
Hajiya Fatima Aliyu Aminu Garu, wife of Hon. Aliyu Aminu Garu, who represents Bauchi Federal Constituency, has sparked widespread criticism after allegedly distributing sugarcane sticks to youths as part of an empowerment initiative.
Images from the event have attracted significant ridicule, with many questioning the purpose and effectiveness of such an empowerment program.
The Bauchi State Chapter of the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) weighed in on the matter, expressing disappointment in the initiative. In a statement, the State Secretary of the PRP, Abdulazeez Haruna, said, “This gesture falls far short of the standard of representation expected for the people of Bauchi Federal Constituency.”
He continued, “We believe that true representation goes beyond mere tokenism and superficial empowerment schemes. The people of Bauchi Local Government Area deserve more meaningful developmental projects that address their urgent needs.”

Haruna also called on Hon. Aliyu Garu to account for his performance in the National Assembly. “We demand transparency on the developmental initiatives he has brought to Bauchi since his election. How many bills has he sponsored, and what tangible projects have improved the livelihoods of the constituents?” he questioned.
The PRP further urged the people of Bauchi to hold their representative accountable, insisting that true leadership should reflect the aspirations of the community. Haruna concluded, “It is time for change, and we stand ready to offer better representation to the people of Bauchi.”
The backlash has opened a broader conversation about the responsibility of public officials to deliver substantive empowerment programs that provide lasting benefits for their communities.
