Lion kills former president Obasanjo’s zoo keeper
A lion at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL) in Abeokuta, Ogun State, has killed its handler, Babaji Daule. The incident, which took place in the early hours of Saturday, has left many in the community deeply shocked.
The OOPL, a legacy project of Nigeria’s former Head of State and twice-elected President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, houses a zoological garden where the tragedy unfolded.
According to YOUNEWS, the Chief Security Officer of the zoo reported the incident at about 7:40 AM. It was revealed that the handler failed to properly secure the locks and barricade of the lion’s enclosure before attempting to feed the animal. This negligence allowed the lion to escape from its cage and launch an attack.

While trying to feed the male lion, Babaji Daule was fatally injured, with severe wounds to his neck. Despite efforts to intervene, he passed away shortly after the attack. Security personnel eventually shot the lion to release its grip on the handler and prevent further harm.
The Ogun State Police Command confirmed the occurrence through spokesperson Omolola Odutola, who stated that an investigation is ongoing.
The victim’s body was transported to Ijaye General Hospital mortuary, while authorities are reviewing security protocols at the zoo to ensure the safety of both the animals and the staff.
