Maiduguri flood receding, normalcy beginning to return – NEMA
The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has provided an update on the devastating flooding in Maiduguri, Borno State, stating that the floodwaters are beginning to recede and normalcy is gradually returning to the city.
NEMA Director General, Zubaida Umar, made the announcement in a statement on Thursday, highlighting the progress made since the onset of the flood, which was caused by a broken spillway at the Alau Dam. This event has been described as the worst flooding in Nigeria’s history.
“Though our work is far from being done and our round-the-clock emergency response, monitoring, and assessment continue, it’s important to provide some updates.
First is the relieving observation that the flood level in Maiduguri is receding, and normalcy is beginning to return to the metropolis,” Umar said.

While the floodwaters are lowering, NEMA emphasized that search and rescue operations remain ongoing. Victims of the disaster are being temporarily housed in eight camps provided by the Borno State Government.
According to preliminary assessments, over 400,000 people have been affected by the disaster. Those not in camps are staying with relatives in safer, higher areas.
To prevent the outbreak of waterborne diseases, NEMA has deployed three water purification trucks to Maiduguri.
They are also working with chemical companies to purify household water. Additionally, residents have been warned to be vigilant for harmful aquatic animals such as snakes, which may be more prevalent in flooded areas.
“We assure the people that the government has mobilised and will continue to mobilise resources for their recovery,” Umar added, pledging continued support for flood victims both within and outside the camps.
