Naomi Osaka parts ways with her coach, Wim Fissette

Story by Jane AISO

Naomi Osaka has announced that she has parted ways with her coach Wim Fissette after a four-year partnership spanning two stints. The 26-year-old Japanese tennis star shared the news on Instagram, reflecting on their time together with appreciation.

Osaka, a former world number one, won two of her four Grand Slam titles under Fissette’s guidance. However, she has struggled this season, currently ranked 75th and facing challenges since returning to the tour following a maternity break.

“Four years, two slams and a whole lot of memories,” Osaka wrote. “Thanks Wim for being a great coach and an even greater person. Wishing you all the best.”

Despite a promising start, Osaka’s 2024 season has been difficult, with her only notable performances being quarter-final appearances at Doha and Hertogenbosch. She failed to progress beyond the second round in each of the four Grand Slam events she competed in this year.

Fissette, a Belgian coach known for his successful stints with several top players, helped guide Osaka to significant victories and was pivotal during her career peaks. The end of their collaboration marks a new chapter for Osaka as she looks to rebuild her career and regain her form.
