NEMA initiates urgent assessment as Yola-Gombe bridge collapses
The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has swiftly conducted an on-the-spot assessment following the collapse of a major bridge on the Yola-Gombe Road, which has caused significant disruption to transportation across the region.
The incident took place in the Lamurde Local Government Area of Adamawa State, leaving commuters and goods stranded and severely impacting trade and travel between the two states.
Initial investigations suggest that the collapse resulted from structural weaknesses exacerbated by heavy seasonal rains.
In response to the crisis, NEMA’s Director General, Mrs. Zubaida Umar, promptly initiated a rapid assessment to evaluate the extent of the damage and recommend necessary mitigation measures.
The assessment team was led by Mr. Musa Yakubu from NEMA’s Yola operations office, working in collaboration with the Local Emergency Management Committee (LEMC) of Lamurde LGA.
Preliminary reports from the assessment indicate that the collapse has significantly affected critical infrastructure, creating a major transportation bottleneck and causing substantial delays for emergency services.
Local residents have been advised to avoid the area until further notice, as the site poses serious safety risks.
Mr. Musa Yakubu, representing NEMA, highlighted the urgent need for government support to ensure proper maintenance of such vital infrastructure.
He also urged local residents to exercise patience during the reconstruction process, acknowledging that while it may take time, the outcome will ultimately provide a safer and more durable connection for the community.
