New CJN vows to combat corruption relentlessly

The new Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, has said there would be zero tolerance for corruption under her watch.

“All pre-election matters will terminate at the Court of Appeal. I have zero tolerance for corruption,” she said.

Kekere-Ekun made this statement on Wednesday after the Senate confirmed her as the substantive Chief Justice of Nigeria.

Her confirmation followed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s request in a letter submitted to the Senate.

She had been acting in that capacity since August, following the retirement of Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, her predecessor.

She arrived at the Senate chamber at 12:30 PM, accompanied by other Supreme Court and Court of Appeal justices. The screening lasted about two hours, during which senators engaged her with questions regarding judicial reforms.

During the session, Justice Kekere-Ekun stated that she would leverage technology to ensure the swift dispensation of justice in the country. She also pledged to maintain the judiciary’s independence from external influence.

Justice Kekere-Ekun is now Nigeria’s 23rd substantive Chief Justice and the second woman to hold the position in the country’s history.
