Passenger plane makes emergency landing over bomb threat

story from Jane AISO

An Indian passenger plane en route from Mumbai to Frankfurt made an emergency landing in Erzurum, Türkiye, on Friday afternoon due to a reported bomb threat.

The Vistara Airlines flight UK27, carrying 247 passengers and crew, was diverted to Erzurum Airport “due to security reasons,” the airline confirmed.

According to a statement from Vistara Airlines, the flight landed safely at 19:05 local time.

While the airline referred to the diversion as being due to “security reasons,” some reports have suggested that the plane landed in response to a bomb threat.

Emergency response teams, including Turkish Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) personnel, medical staff, police, and firefighters, were immediately dispatched to the airport.

Passengers were safely evacuated from the aircraft, and a comprehensive search of the cabin and cargo areas was conducted to ensure no threats remained.

Erzurum Governor Mustafa Cifci provided details about the incident, stating that AFAD teams had successfully evacuated the passengers and law enforcement, including special operations police, were on site.

He also mentioned that Erzurum airspace had been closed to other flights to ensure safety.

The exact nature of the security threat remains under investigation, and authorities have not yet confirmed whether the threat was a hoax or a credible danger.

The incident has heightened security measures and scrutiny at airports across Türkiye.
