PDP suspends Senator Dino Melaye over alleged anti-party activities

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has suspended Senator Dino Melaye, a prominent figure within the party, due to alleged anti-party activities.

This decision was made by the ward party executive committee in Ayetoro/Iluagba Ward 1, following an investigation by a disciplinary committee into Melaye’s recent actions.

According to a letter obtained by Punch Online, Melaye’s behaviour was deemed harmful to the PDP’s interests and unity, leading to his suspension.

This action is part of a broader pattern within the PDP, which has previously suspended other members for similar reasons. Notable examples include Peter Babalola from Osun, who was suspended in August 2024 for alleged anti-party activities and absenteeism from party meetings over two years, and former Governor Samuel Ortom, who faced suspension by the Benue PDP for similar reasons.

The PDP’s disciplinary measures reflect its commitment to maintaining party discipline and cohesion. The resolution to suspend Melaye states:

“Senator Dino Melaye’s conduct has brought embarrassment and disrepute to the party and his continued membership is no longer tenable. Therefore, the Ward party exco hereby suspends Dino Melaye from the Peoples Democratic Party, effective immediately.”

This suspension is based on Article 59 (1) of the PDP constitution, which authorises ward party executives to enforce disciplinary actions against members who violate party rules.

Further details regarding the specific nature of Melaye’s alleged infractions and the circumstances leading to his suspension are still emerging.
