Police summon officers over alleged ₦1 million extortion from Corps members
The Lagos State Police Command has summoned three officers for allegedly extorting ₦1 million from three National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members in the Surulere area of Lagos.
The incident, which sparked outrage after going viral on social media, has drawn attention to concerns about police misconduct and extortion in the region.
The footage of the incident was shared by social media user Oluyemi Fasipe on Friday, who alleged that the officers involved had threatened the corps members with firearms and forcibly taken them to the Kafaru Oluwole Tinubu House, Area C Police Command in Lagos.
According to Fasipe, the officers detained and robbed the corps members, extorting ₦1 million as a result of their inability to present a physical copy of a driver’s license.

“Dear @BenHundeyin, Your officers today in Surulere extorted 1 million naira from three corps members,” Fasipe wrote on X (formerly Twitter). “They were threatened with firearms, kidnapped, and taken to the KAFARU OLUWOLE TINUBU HOUSE AREA C POLICE COMMAND of the @LagosPoliceNG where they were robbed.”
The shared video shows officers conducting a search of the car’s occupants, leading to a tense confrontation. More officers arrived at the scene, and one officer was filmed entering the vehicle, demanding the corps members stop recording the encounter and preventing them from contacting their family or friends. The video captured the frustration and distress of the corps members as they attempted to navigate the troubling situation.
In response to the social media posts, the Lagos State Police Command’s Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed that the officers implicated in the extortion have been summoned. He announced that an internal trial has been initiated to investigate the matter.
“The men have been summoned and their trial has commenced,” Hundeyin responded on X. “We urge the complainants to visit the Complaint Response Unit at the State Headquarters to testify at the ongoing trial.”
