Pope slams both Harris, Trump, tells US Catholics to choose ‘lesser evil’

Story by Jane AISO

Pope Francis took a strong stance on key issues concerning the upcoming US presidential election, criticising both former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris during a press conference on his flight back to Rome.

Addressing Trump’s plan to deport millions of immigrants, the Pope called the lack of welcome for migrants a “grave” sin. He also condemned Harris’ support for abortion rights, likening the act of abortion to an “assassination.”

The pontiff, while not naming either candidate directly, urged US Catholics to vote, advising them to choose the “lesser evil” in the November election. Despite his criticism of both candidates’ policies, Pope Francis stressed that abstaining from voting was not an option, saying, “Not voting is ugly. It is not good. You must vote.”

His comments come at the close of a demanding 12 day tour across Southeast Asia and Oceania.
