Protest erupts over hike in petrol pump price

Heavy protest has erupted in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital following the sudden hike in petrol pump price.

The protest broke out along Maraba-GSS Fate Road, and commercial tricycle operators blocked major roads to protest against general hardship occasioned by the high cost of living in the country.

Residents who could not access the tricycles resorted to trekking long distances to their destinations.

Some residents around the scene said the police used tear gas to disperse the big group of commuters and tricycle riders.

On Tuesday morning, the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) adjusted pump price in different states, prompting the price of the Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) in major Nigerian states to skyrocket to over N900, N1,200 per litre.

A memo issued by NNPCL directed an upward review of PMS pump prices in different states.

This development comes barely two days after NNPCL admitted to challenges in importing fuel due to an $8 billion debt.
