Senate postpones public hearing on alleged economic sabotage in oil sector
The Nigerian Senate has postponed its planned investigation into allegations of sabotage in the petroleum sector, initially scheduled for September 10-12, 2024. The decision to delay the probe was announced by the Senate Leader, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, who chairs the ad-hoc committee set up to investigate the matter.
The postponement is attributed to the need for broader consultations with key stakeholders in the petroleum industry, whose input is deemed vital for the comprehensive success of the probe. Legislative demands and the necessity of conducting a thorough investigation were also cited as reasons for the delay.

This probe was originally intended to examine billions spent on maintaining Nigeria’s refineries, scrutinise regulatory agencies’ payment to transporters, and investigate the importation of substandard petroleum products into the country. The Senate ad-hoc committee had already completed preliminary engagements with ministries, departments, agencies (MDAs), and private oil firms.
Bamidele explained that the decision was taken “in the best interest of the nation” and that a new date for the hearing will be announced soon.
