Soldiers repel thugs attack on INEC office ahead of Edo election

In a crucial development just hours before the Edo State governorship election, soldiers successfully thwarted an attempted invasion by suspected thugs at the Oredo Local Government Secretariat of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The incident was disclosed by Edo State Commissioner for Communication and Orientation, Chris Nehikhare, during a press conference held in Benin City.

Nehikhare commended the soldiers for their swift action, which prevented potential chaos at the INEC office. He revealed that the thugs had planned to target several collation centres, specifically in Oredo, Egor, and Ikpoba Okha local government areas, although he did not specify which political party they were affiliated with.

Addressing the media, Nehikhare stated, “We have just been informed that thugs have taken over some of the INEC offices across various local government areas. However, I’m pleased to report that soldiers have repelled these thugs from the Oredo secretariat and secured the area.”

He urged the military to extend their efforts across all 18 local government offices, emphasizing the importance of maintaining order during the electoral process. The commissioner reassured the public that measures were in place to protect the integrity of the election, highlighting the military’s role in ensuring safety at collation centres.

Nehikhare’s statements reflect growing concerns over electoral violence in Nigeria, as authorities strive to ensure a peaceful environment for voters.

The proactive response of the military has been met with appreciation from the state government, which continues to monitor the situation closely.
