State reports Mpox outbreak, suspected Cholera cases
Edo State has confirmed one case of Mpox and identified eight suspected cases of Cholera, according to Dr. Ojeifo Stephenson, the Director of Public Health at the Ministry of Health.
Dr. Stephenson revealed that the state has been proactive since January, working to raise awareness and encourage prompt reporting to health facilities. Despite the efforts, 11 suspected cases were noted, with eight being reactive to tests.
In related news, the Nigerian Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) reported that children aged 0-5 years are predominantly affected by Mpox in Nigeria. Out of 48 confirmed cases this year, this age group is the most impacted. Mpox spreads through contact with infected individuals or contaminated materials.

NCDC’s latest update shows a rise in confirmed Mpox cases and a notable increase in suspected cases. The agency reports that 20 states and the Federal Capital Territory have recorded confirmed Mpox cases across 35 Local Government Areas in 2024.
