Tambuwal’s aide remanded for alleged defamation against Governor Aliyu, wife

A Chief Magistrate Court has ordered the remand of Shafi’u Umar-Tureta, a former Special Assistant to ex-Governor Aminu Tambuwal, in Correctional Center Custody over accusations of circulating falsehood against Sokoto State Governor, Ahmad Aliyu, and his wife.

The accusations, involving injurious falsehood and defamation, were reportedly carried out via a social media platform.

The police prosecutor, Inspector Abdurahman Mansur, highlighted that these actions contravened the penal code law.

The First Information Report (FIR) states that Umar-Tureta committed the alleged offences on July 18, 2024.

However, the accused denied the charges during his initial court appearance on August 26, 2024.

The lead defense counsel, Al’Mustafa Abubakar, sought Umar-Tureta’s bail via an oral application, but the prosecution objected.

In her ruling, Chief Magistrate Fatima Hassan emphasized the need for a formal bail application due to the severity of the offences.

The court has set the next hearing for September 18, 2024, and ordered the accused to remain in custody.
