Nurse picks extra shifts leaving 10-week-old son to die of heat

A 28-year-old Nigerian nurse based in the UK, Ruth Auta, has been sentenced to three years imprisonment for abandoning her 10-week-old baby, Joshua, who subsequently died.

On December 20, 2022, Auta left her infant unattended in her nurse’s accommodation for eight hours while she went to work.

Initially, she claimed to have picked Joshua up from a childminder and found him unresponsive upon waking.

However, investigations revealed a starkly different narrative, as CCTV footage and troubling text messages contradicted her account, leading to her arrest and eventual guilty plea.

Evidence presented in court indicated that Joshua may have “overheated” due to being excessively clothed and wrapped in bedding.

Ruth Auta was charged with cruelty to a child and received her sentence at Bolton Crown Court on September 10.
