Varsity students trapped as 3-storey building collapses
Story by Jane AISO
Several students from the University of Benin (UNIBEN) were trapped on Saturday morning after a three-storey building collapsed in Ekosodin, a community near the university. The incident occurred during a heavy downpour, which is believed to have contributed to the structure’s failure.
Ekosodin, known for housing a large student population, is adjacent to the University of Benin campus. The collapsed building, located on Ekhator Street in Benin City, Edo State, has left rescue teams racing against time to pull survivors from the debris.
Although some of the trapped students have already been rescued, efforts are ongoing to locate and save others who may still be buried under the rubble. According to eyewitnesses, the situation remains dire as several of the victims were severely injured.

One of the students present at the scene described the tense atmosphere, stating, “The rescue team is still searching for one of the victims who remains trapped inside. We heard her calling from inside the rubble, and the team has not given up—they are doing everything they can to get her out safely.”
Rescue operations are being led by the Dean of Student Affairs, who is coordinating efforts with university personnel and emergency services. Several of the injured students have been rushed to nearby hospitals for medical treatment.
At the time of reporting, the university management has yet to release an official statement regarding the exact cause of the collapse or provide a full account of the number of students affected.
