We didn’t ban under-18 students from writing WASSCE, NECO — Minister
The Federal Ministry of Education has clarified that there is no ban on under-18-year-olds from writing the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) and National Examinations Council (NECO) exams.
Minister of State for Education, Dr. Yusuf Sununu, stated this during the 2024 International Literacy Day (ILD) in Abuja, debunking misconceptions that arose from earlier comments made by the Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman.
Sununu explained that the discussion was about the recommended age for tertiary institution admissions, as per the 6:3:3:4 education system, and not about secondary school exams.
He stressed that the ministry is working on developing guidelines to handle cases of exceptionally talented students, ensuring no child is unfairly blocked from progressing academically.

He also emphasized the role of literacy in fostering socio-economic development, highlighting the government’s commitment to addressing literacy challenges through the “Education for Renewed Hope” roadmap (2024-2027).
The ILD 2024 theme is “Promoting Multilingual Education: Literacy for Mutual Understanding and Peace.”
