Nigeria introduces ‘Buy Now, Pay Later’ portal to encourage CNG adoption

The Nigerian government has launched a new ‘Buy Now, Pay Later’ portal to facilitate the transition to Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) as an alternative to petrol.

This initiative enables vehicle owners to convert their petrol-powered cars to CNG while spreading the conversion costs over manageable monthly installments.

The announcement was made by the National Orientation Agency (NOA) on its official X handle.

The government stated that this initiative makes switching to CNG more accessible and financially feasible, allowing drivers to transition without an immediate financial burden.

“With flexible payment plans tailored to your budget, transitioning from petrol to CNG has never been easier or more affordable,” the government highlighted, noting the simple online application process and quick approval for potential converters.

This launch supports the Presidential CNG initiative, which aims to establish CNG conversion centers nationwide. In the past six months, centers have already been established in the Federal Capital Territory, Ogun, Ekiti, Nasarawa, and other states.

The federal government aims to convert one million vehicles to Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) by 2027, with expectations of reducing road transportation costs by 40%.

This initiative comes at a crucial moment as Nigerians grapple with rising transport expenses, with fuel prices escalating to between ₦950.22 and ₦1,100 per liter, up from ₦770.
