Gov. Yusuf defies court order, insists LG election will hold Saturday

Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf asserts that there will be no reversal on the planned local government elections set for Saturday, despite a federal court ruling that challenges the electoral process.

This announcement was made during a flag presentation for 44 chairmanship candidates of the New Nigerian People’s Party (NNPP) at the Sani Abacha Indoor Stadium, attended by numerous party supporters.

The court ruling, delivered by Justice Simon Ameboda, called for the removal of the chairman and members of the Kano State Independent Electoral Commission (KANSIEC) and mandated a halt to the elections until the commission is properly reconstituted.

Nevertheless, Governor Yusuf maintains that the state government, alongside KANSIEC, possesses the constitutional authority to conduct the elections, stating, “No one will stop the KANSIEC from holding the polls.”

He emphasized the importance of maintaining the peace currently enjoyed by the citizens and indicated that the government is prepared to swear in any candidates declared winners by the electoral body.

Yusuf also urged NNPP members to prepare diligently for the upcoming elections, calling them the true supporters of the party.

In a related development, a Kano state high court, led by Justice Sanusi Ado Ma’aji, is expected to deliver a judgment on a lawsuit filed by KANSIEC against 19 political parties, with the aim of resolving issues that could impede the elections. The judge had previously issued an interim order on September 26 to prevent any actions that might disrupt the election process.

As the situation unfolds, tensions remain high regarding the legitimacy of the elections amid ongoing legal challenges.
