CAF awards Nigeria 3 points, 3 goals over Libya game incident

The Disciplinary Board of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) has awarded Nigeria three points and three goals for the missed Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier against Libya. In addition, the Libyan Football Federation has been fined due to the treatment Nigeria’s Super Eagles experienced in Libya.

Nigeria defeated Libya in the first leg of their match, and the CAF ruling further strengthens their qualifying position.

CAF President Patrice Motsepe previously assured a thorough investigation following the controversy around Nigeria’s qualifier against Libya. According to a statement by CAF Disciplinary Board Chairperson Ousmane Kane, the board found Libya guilty of “inhumane treatment” toward the Nigerian team. Consequently, the Libya-Nigeria match scheduled for October 15, 2024, in Benghazi was declared a 3-0 forfeit win for Nigeria under CAF regulations.

The five-member disciplinary committee includes representatives from Senegal, Kenya, Chad, Lesotho, and South Africa.

CAF’s decision follows reports that Nigerian players and officials were stranded for hours at a Libyan airport without access to food or internet. They eventually left Libya after diplomatic efforts and social media outcry.

With this decision, Nigeria now leads Group A with 10 points from four matches. A victory or draw against Benin Republic on November 14 would secure Nigeria’s place in the 2025 AFCON finals, set for Morocco in late 2025 and early 2026.
