Helicopter crash: Why we have not recovered black box, flight data recorder – NSIB
The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) has disclosed that, despite extensive search efforts, they have not yet located the wreckage or critical components, such as the black box, Flight Data Recorder (FDR), or Cockpit Voice Recorder (CVR), from the recent helicopter crash.
The NSIB attributes these challenges to difficult operating conditions, poor visibility at depth, and limitations of human divers.
In a statement from NSIB’s Director of Public Affairs and Family Assistance, Bimbo Olawumi Oladeji, it was confirmed that recovery efforts are still ongoing following the crash of a Sikorsky SK76 helicopter, registration 5N BQG, operated by Eastwind Aviation.

The incident occurred on October 24, 2024, with eight people on board and took place off the coast of Bonny Finima in the Atlantic Ocean.
According to the NSIB, divers began setting up equipment on Saturday at 11:55 AM, with preliminary underwater searches commencing by 2:15 PM. However, by 4:30 PM, diving operations were paused due to diminishing daylight. Operations were scheduled to resume the following day at 9:00 AM local time.
To further aid in the search, the NSIB plans to deploy a Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) that can operate at depths of up to 1,000 metres. Equipped with advanced cameras, sensors, and a Tether Management System (TMS), the ROV will allow the NSIB team to conduct comprehensive surveys, collect environmental data, and capture essential evidence to understand the cause of the crash. The ROV’s capabilities in deep-water environments will be crucial for assessing wreckage conditions and gathering vital information.
NSIB Director General Alex Badeh expressed his condolences to the families of the crew and passengers, affirming the bureau’s commitment to a thorough investigation.
He also urged the public to refrain from speculation, emphasising the importance of respecting the integrity of the recovery and investigation processes.
