Terrorists seize control of Nigeria’s largest military training camp
The Niger State House of Assembly has raised concerns about the takeover of the Nagwamase Military Cantonment in Kontagora, Nigeria’s largest military training camp, by terrorists.
The gunmen have also displaced approximately 23 farming communities in the vicinity.
This facility, crucial for the training of personnel from the Nigerian Army Artillery Corps, has reportedly been occupied by militants.
In response, the Assembly is urging the State Government to coordinate with military authorities to remove the terrorists from the camp, which also serves as a hub for local communities.
During a plenary session on Tuesday, Abdullahi Isah, the member representing Kontagora II State Constituency, presented a motion of urgent public importance regarding the takeover of a significant military camp.
He reported that the camp, which spans a large area from Kontagora local government to parts of Mariga local government, is now under the control of armed militants.
Isah stated, “This military camp has been overtaken by terrorists, who have reportedly established at least eight different camps in the region. The presence of these militants in what was once a training facility now poses a severe security threat to the communities in both Kontagora and Mariga local government areas.”
He noted that in the past month, communities within the training camp have faced relentless attacks from the terrorists, who act with impunity. Some residents abducted during recent operations are still being held by the militants.
After extensive discussions, the Assembly urged the State Government to urgently collaborate with military authorities to enhance efforts to remove the terrorists from the training camp. This action would enable the displaced communities to safely return to their homes.
