Gov. Buni commended for gender responsive initiatives in Yobe
Story by Sa’adatu MAINA, Damaturu
The Executive Governor of Yobe State, Honourable Mai Mala Buni, has been commended for officially launching the 2025 bilateral discussions with ministries, departments, and agencies (MDAs).
Hajiya Fatima Paga, the Focal Person for UN Women, commended the state government’s commitment to transparency, citizen participation in governance, and inclusive budget planning.
Speaking to journalists, Hajiya Paga urged the MDAs to adopt a gender responsive approach in their budget presentations.
She emphasised that such an approach is critical for addressing the specific needs of both men and women, ensuring equitable access to resources, services, and opportunities in Yobe State.
Given the state’s socioeconomic landscape, where women face greater barriers in education, healthcare, and economic participation, she stressed that a gender-responsive budget could help bridge these gaps.
Hajiya Paga highlighted the importance of including Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 2, 3, 4, and 5 in budget discussions, as these promote gender equality by directing funds toward women’s empowerment, maternal health, and education.
She also pointed out that these efforts would ensure men benefit from targeted interventions, and persons with special needs are not left behind.
Furthermore, she applauded the efforts of Governor Buni for his commitment to girl-child education, particularly through the approval of additional girls’ secondary schools across the state.
Hajiya Paga also called on international organisations, such as UN Women, UNDP, UNICEF, and UNFPA, to enhance their support for Yobe State as it advances its development agenda.
